Boarding the Sundays River Ferry

These days marketing a destination is all about experiencing that destination rather than just going there.  One of my favorite experiences around Port Elizabeth is cruising on the Sundays River Ferry and even though I have done some posts on it before, I have decided to do a series about it this week.  The photos used in the series were taken on a cruise I got to go on after a Addo Tourism meeting at Dungbeetle River Lodge a week or so…

Grey Heron on a pole

This Grey Heron was taking a break on a pole in the Sundays River at Colchester and wasn't really bothered when we cruised past it on the Sundays River Ferry.  The Grey Heron (Ardea cinerea), is a wading bird of the heron family Ardeidae and grows to about one meter in height with a wingspan of between 1,5 and 2 meters.  It normally feeds in shallow water, catching fish, frogs and insects with its long bill.  Herons will also take small…

Sundays River view

Its peak holiday season so the Sundays River is probably packed with boats and holiday makers, very different from this sight I photographed a little while ago.  The Sundays River originated close to Nieu Bethesda north of Graaff Reinet in the Karoo and is said to be the fastest flowing river in South Africa.  Not too sure how they come to that conclusion.

Sailing to the dunes

With the onset of the summer holidays the Sundays River around Colchester is about to become a very busy place.  Fishing, paddling, boating, relaxing, water skiing, floating, swimming, you name it.  The last time I went down the Sundays River on the Sundays River Ferry was a nice quiet weekday while it was school so there were only one or two other boats on the river that day.  Here the ferry stops at it's turning point to give visitors the…

Bridge series #2 – N2 over Sundays River

This is post #2 in the Port Elizabeth bridges series.  Cars approaching Port Elizabeth on the busy N2 from the east fly across the bridge over the Sundays River with only a quick glance towards the river.  I often wonder how many don't even see it while I'm sure most don't know of the historic Mackay Bridge only a couple of hundred meters upstream.  With the increase of traffic on the N2 the road from Port Elizabeth to Colchester has been turned into…

Bridge series #1 – Mackay Bridge

Port Elizabeth isn't famous for it's bridges but it does have a couple of notable ones.  Some historic, one imposing and a couple that are often used.  I collected pictures of a few of them and decided to put together a series showing you six bridges from around the city.  I'm starting with one of my favourite bridges, the historic Mackay Bridge in Colchester.  During the mid 1800's this specific spot was quite a popular one with travellers as it had…

Jetties on the Sundays River

The Sundays River is quite a popular recreational playground with everything from water ski to just leisurely sitting with a fishing line in the water.  Most of the houses on the riverside (and some of those that isn't) have their own jetties with some of them having been there for decades already.

What goes up must come down

One of my favourite things about cruising on the Sundays River with the Sundays River Ferry is climbing the dunes at the turning point.  Going up is a leg aching, brow sweating and huff and puff affair but the view from the top makes it absolutely worth it.  Plus what goes up must come down...

Fishing on Heritage Day

Today is National Heritage Day, an official public holiday instituted by the government for everybody in this Rainbow Nation to celebrate their own heritage.  This day is also informally known as National Braai Day as a braai (barbecue) is an important part of most cultures in South Africa and thus closely linked to our collective heritages.  And here I am without a braai picture.  To most people fishing is part of their heritage as well so I'm posting a picture of a couple…

Climbing some epic dunes

Port Elizabeth has some magnificent sand dune for those wannabe mountain climbers who don't prefer to do the rocky thing.  To the west the Maitland Beach sand dune is probably the best known one with many locals enjoying it over weekend.  On the eastern side of Port Elizabeth there are some truly epic sand dunes though.  The Alexandria Dune field, the biggest coastal dune field in the Southern Hemisphere, starts at the Sundays River Mouth and stretches eastward over a distance…
