Happy Birthday to me

Last year on my birthday I went down to the beachfront and took a self portrait of myself for birthday sake, so at lunchtime I headed down to Shark Rock Pier to do it again. This time I had nothing to do a reflection or mirror shot in, so I just did the whole "hold the camera up with both hands and smile while taking the picture into the general direction of my face" photo thing. A guy was standing…

Taking the dog for a stroll

Another picture from our trip down to the beach on Sunday. A couple (not sure if it an actual couple or father and daughter, but that doesn't matter) taking their dog for a walk with Shark Rock Pier and a part of Central in the background. It was an unusual angle as you don't often see the pier with town looking so close in the background.

Hobie Beach

I know its winter and a bit cold outside and this is a summer picture, but I feel like going to the beach for some reason. Hobie Beach is one of Port Elizabeth's main beaches. It can be found across the road from the Boardwalk Casino complex and is where Shark Rock Pier is situated. The beach is one of Port Elizabeth's 4 Blue Flag Beaches and is a favorite with both young and old.

Night time Pier

Evening shot of Shark Rock Pier at Hobie Beach. The pier is quite a popular spot and is situated next to Hobie Beach which is a blue flag beach. The Boardwalk Casino and Entertainment Complex is just across the street and the popular beachfront promenade leads right onto the pier. A little while ago I found a web cam overlooking Hobie Beach with the pier in the back ground. Have a look at it here.

Shark Rock Pier

Shark Rock Pier has featured in many of our posts, but it has many moods, so we never tire of photographing it. This shot was taken as the sun was making her presence felt and you can see her rays catching the top of the waves, from under the pier.

Lifeguards

On hobie beach during the holiday season, this lifeguard's shed made an appearance near the Shark Rock Pier. These volunteers do amazing work keeping an eye on holidaymakers as they enjoy the waves. As you can see from the sign, they have been in action for the past 50 years. Thanks guys and girls!

Shark Rock Pier at night

One of the main beaches in Port Elizabeth is called Hobie Beach. It is a Blue Flag beach just across the road from The Boardwalk entertainment complex and a very popular beach. Until the late 1980's Hobie Beach was nothing more than a rocky stretch of coastline. It was then decided to have a pier built to block the sand moving along the coastline and form a beach. Today the value of the beach and surrounding area to the city…

Shark Rock Pier in sepia

Last night we headed down to the beachfront for the annual Opening of the Season festivities. The highlight of the evening is a fireworks display from Shark Rock Pier at Hobie Beach. I will post a couple of fireworks pics tomorrow. We found a good spot from where we had a nice view of the pier and settled in for our wait until the fireworks started at 20:30. Just after sunset the view across to the pier was beautiful, and…
