Pasella walking the Sacramento Trail with Abel Kraamsaal

https://youtube.googleapis.com/v/uoYinU8CjRw&source=udsAs you know I like to post a video on a Friday and this week I found a Pasella clip on YouTube I Haven't posted on the blog yet.  Can't believe I forgot about this one as I was involved behind the scenes in helping to organize it.  The insert featured Port Elizabeth based Afrikaans singer Abel Kraamsaal.  Pasella took Abel for a walk on the Sacramento Trail and the two guides that took them tell the viewers more about the shipwreck, Khoisan…

Schoenies views

Schoenmakerskop (or Schoenies) is everybody's favorite seaside "village" in Port Elizabeth.  A beautiful spot with a rugged coastline, safe swimming gullies and hiking trails plus it doesn't get anywhere as busy as the city's main beachfront.  I popped down to Schoenies to look for a newly placed Geocache and caught Drama Princess on camera while she enjoyed the views.

Tanks at Schoenies

Most people enjoy Port Elizabeth's main beaches but there are the few who try to flee the crowds to their favorite hidden spots and the little "beaches" and gullies in Schoenmakerskop are amongst these.  The most popular one in Schoenies is just in front of the Sacramento Restaurant and can be reached via steps down to the beach.  The spot is called Tanks.  According to Luc Hosten of Friends of Schoenmakerskop there are two theories on where the name came from.  The first one is that apparently large…

The Coastal Fynbos Trail

The Coastal Fynbos Trail in Schoenmakerskop is probably one of the slightly lesser known trails around Port Elizabeth.  Thanks to the PE Geocaching series which created the letters PE as geoart on the Geocache map, a few more people have set off to explore the trail lately. The trail is a circular trail and covers about 7 km on the eastern side of the village, starting at Sappershoek.  The first section of the trail is an inland route through the coastal fynbos…

Remains of a lifeboat

At the eastern end of Schoenmakerskop you will find one of the lifeboats from the Oceanos that sank on the Wild Coast in 1991.  Personally I think its quite a significant "wreck" on our coastline.  Going the other way, about halfway along the Sacramento Trail west of Schoenies, there is what also looks like the remains of a lifeboat.  Some of the knowledgable locals may know where its from, but I just thought it made for an interesting object to include…

Flowers on the Fynbos Trail

I recently had an outing along the Fynbos Trail near Schoenmakerskop with a friend while planting some geocaches and snapped this picture of a bush of flowers.  Not exactly sure what it was or if its even supposed to grow naturally on the Wildside.  I just thought it makes for a nice scene.

Setting out on the Sacramento Trail

Although most people do the Sacramento Trail as a straight forward out and back along the coastal route, there are two very different routes possible.  The alternative route heads slightly inland from the cannon through fynbos before heading along the top of the vegetated sand dunes towards Sardinia Bay.

A quick hike on the Wildside

Port Elizabeth has a number of excellent hiking trails to get one out the city while only a couple of kilometers away from it.  I've been exploring the Fynbos Trail at Schoenmakerskop a bit more lately and got to walk most of it the other day.  Not a trail I'd like to do on a hot day as there isn't any shade along the way, but there are beautiful coastal views and lots of Fynbos and coastal flora to be…
