Walking the coast on the Sacramento

Port Elizabeth has a stunningly beautiful coastline starting with the huge sand dunes at Colchester, white sandy and safe swimming beaches on the main beachfront, a rocky shoreline along the Wildside through to the "long walk on the beach" beaches at Sardinia Bay and Maitland.  There are two guided hikes on during Tourism Month where the public has been invited to join Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism and the metro's nature conservation unit in enjoying this stunning coastline.  Follow the links for…

Sacramento Trail at Sardinia Bay

The Sacramento Trail along the coast between Schoenmakerskop and Sardinia Bay isn't just the most popular trail in the city but probably also one of the most scenic.  A couple of us decided to do the 7km long trail the other day with only myself having done it (long ago) previously.  We decided to take the trail along the shore from Schoenies and then turn up to the top trail along the vegetated dunes back from Sardinia Bay.  The reason we…

Schoenies fresh water stream

The area around Schoenmakerskop and the Sacramento Trail has a number of fresh water springs seeping out the surrounding countryside and flowing down towards the sea. With all the rain we've had these past couple of months some of the little streams are flowing nice and strong. This specific one can be found close to the Sacramento monument a few hundred meters down the trail.

Sacramento cannon head on

The brass cannon of the Portuguese galleon Sacramento, which sank close by in 1647, standing at the end of the road in Schoenmakerskop is a well known Port Elizabeth landmark and often gets photographed by both visitors and locals alike.  I've taken pictures of it from the side looking both east and west, but this was the first time I actually took a picture looking at it straight on from the front.

Sacramento wreck monument

A couple of hundred meters down the Sacramento Trail from the Schoenmakerskop side you will find a monument marking the site where the Portuguese gallion Sacramento ran aground on 30 June 1647. 72 survivors set out to walk the 1350 km to the closest port which was in Mozambique. Of the original 72, only nine arrived in Delagoa Bay on 5 January 1648 and of the nine only four made it back to Portugal alive. The wreck site is also…

The Sacramento Trail

On Sunday afternoon I went on a photo walk with a couple of other photographers on the first section of the Sacramento Trail. The Sacramento Trail stretches along the coast between Schoenmakerskop and Sardinia Bay over a distance of 4 kilometers which means you would have covered 8 km walking it there and back. The trail has some awesome view points and follows a route that will take you right down onto the rocky coastline as well as through the…

Schoenies coast

The rugged coastline at Schoenmakerskop looking west towards the village. Schoenies is situated on the southern coast of the city and even though its referred to as a village, its a suburb of Port Elizabeth. I have a special places for Schoenies as I worked in the Sacramento Restaurant over weekends for 5 years. This is where I met the Damselfly, but thats a story for another day. I haven't spent much time there lately so I get my Schoenies…

Schoenies path

If I could choose any place to live in Port Elizabeth no matter what the cost or situation, Schoenmakerskop must be very close if not at the top of my list. Schoenies, as it is affectionately known, is in all purposes a small suburb of Port Elizabeth, but is generally referred to as a village. It is about 5 or so kilometers from suburban Port Elizabeth and can be reach either by driving about 20 kilometers or so along the…
