Red Location Museum – Maduna Road

Maduna Road is one of the road in Langa, Uitenhage, where the Langa massacre took place in 1985.  The Langa massacre took place on the 25th anniversary of the Sharpville massacre of 1960.  The police fired on a group of mourners on their way to a banned funeral, killing 20 people. There was an international outcry following this incident and a Commission of Inquiry (Kannemeyer Commission) was immediately appointed to investigate the cause of the shooting.  The story is told…

Red Location Museum Memory Box – Vuyisile Mini

One of the Memory Boxes in the Red Location Museum is dedicated to Vuyisile Mini, one of the first African National Congress members to be executed by apartheid South Africa.  The space contains three nooses representing those that he was hung on along with Wilson Khayinga and Zinakile Mkaba.  Vuyisile Mini was born in 1920 in the Port Elizabeth.  Mini's militant political activities began in 1951 when he joined the ANC.  In 1952 he was jailed with Govan Mbeki and Raymond Mhlaba…

Cuyler Manor

The Cuyler Manor Museum just outside Uitenhage is one of my favorite spots in the town.  The manor house was built in 1814 by Colonel Jacob Glen Cuyler who was the Landdrost of Uitenhage from 1806 to 1827.  The Cape Dutch style building has been restored and turned into a museum showing how people lived back in the 1800's.  The farmyard around the manor house forms part of the museum complex and include a touch farm, old water mill, a Xhosa…

A little while ago the team from SABC 2 show Pasella was in Port Elizabeth to shoot a couple of stories, one involving vintage cars.  Here the cars used for the insert are lined up at one of the lookout spots along Marine Drive.  This specific insert will be aired on 21 November on SABC 2 between 19:30 and 20:30 some time. Watch the insert on YouTube

Old cars under threat

The St Croix Motor Museum in Port Elizabeth has one of the most magnificent private collections of classic and vintage cars in South Africa.  Unfortunately this museum is under threat of closing due to the fact that the government department that owns the property doesn't want to renew the museum's lease.  The owner of the museum, Eben de Vos, is a very worried man right now as there isn't another suitable site for him to move his collection of over 60 cars to with enough space…

Beetles galore

If you are into cars then the VW AutoPavilion is just the place for you.  The museum is state of the art and a superb representation of everything Volswagen.  On display is everything from actual cars to driver simulators, engine parts right through to the detailed history of VW.  Visitor can also book tours through the VW factory next door to the museum, but I have to be honest here.  I've never been on the factory tour so I can't really comment in it.  I…

Olof Palme Road

Swedish visitors to the Red Location Museum in New Brighton always stand in amazement at the fact that the street in front of the museum is called Olof Palme Road.  Olof Palme was the Prime Minister of Sweden until his assassination on 28 February 1986 and a big supporter of the anti-Apartheid movement in South Africa.  The Swedish government has also made a number of investments in upliftment projects in the New Brighton area since the dawn of democracy.

Cuyler Manor water mill

I think its very sad that so few people visit the Cuyler Manor Museum in Uitenhage and get to see its many features.  One of these is their working water mill which if you ask very nicely, they may just show the workings of to you.

Motor Museum hubcaps

The St Croix Motor Museum is THE place to visit if you are into vintage and classic cars.  I'm not the type of guy who goes gaga over cars and even I was hugely impressed when I walked in there.  But the museum has more than just the actual cars.  The back wall is filled with old hubcaps, steering wheels, car product containers along with badges and logos.
