Lighthouse sunrise

I week or so ago I posted two pics on The Firefly Photo Files taken before and just after sunrise at the lighthouse at Cape Recife Nature Reserve here in Port Elizabeth. Cape Recife beach

I know I've posted a lot of Cape Recife pictures lately, but it is because I haven't had a lot of pictures of it before and only got to really spend a lot of time there recently.This pic is taken on the beach looking towards he point. The lighthouse can be seen in the centre of the picture while the tower on the right is one of the shipping beacons.

Navigational beacons

One of the shipping beacons out at Cape Recife. In addition to the lighthouse there are also two beacons that were used in the early days to guide the ships into Algoa Bay before the advent of modern navigational equipment. Ships sailing along the southern coast towards Algoa Bay had to stay on a straight coarse until they lined up the two beacons. A different view of Donkin Lighthouse

This was taken in Richmond Hill one morning at sunrise, from the road that runs past the proposed block that was halted, which we told you about in Friday's Post. Because of its position on the brow of the Hill on which the first buildings in the city were developed, it is possible to get glimpses of this landmark from many angles.

Surfs up at Noordhoek

Wherever there are good waves there are bound to be surfers. In Port Elizabeth that can either be on the Eastern or Western side of Cape Receife, depending on the wind and the swell.These guys are surfing off the rocks at Noordhoek, on the Western side. The Donkin Memorial

The Donkin Reserve, featuring a lighthouse and a pyramid, is one of the iconic landmarks of PE.
