Lighthouse shadow

Some people are fascinated by shadows and shadow photography.  I like reflections better, but for those shadow people out there, here is a pic of the Donkin Lighthouse's shadow taken from the top of the lighthouse.

Lighthouse

The Cape Recife Lighthouse looking spickerish with its new coat of paint.  The 24 metres high octagonal masonry tower was built in 1851 to warn mariners of this treacherous piece of coastline west of Port Elizabeth.  The light can bee seen from 29 miles away making sure that ships steer clear of the dangerous Thunderbolt Reef.

Pyramid shining

The sun peaking out from behind the Donkin Memorial on the Donkin Reserve.  The Donkin Memorial was erected by Sir Rufane Donkin in 1820 in remembrance of his late wife Lady Elizabeth after whom he named the town.My first Skywatch contribution of the year. Eish, that's bad of me.

Lighthouse renovation

The renovation project on the Cape Recife lighthouse is nearly done with the scaffolding around the lighthouse having been removed and by now the rest are probably gone as well as I took this pic about two weeks ago.  Now I'm just holding thumbs that they will allow visitors to go up the lighthouse again some time soon.

Donkin Reserve, a Port Elizabeth icon

I often post pictures taken around the  Donkin Reserve but I realised that I haven't taken one looking slightly up the hill with both the lighthouse and the pyramid in it for a while.  The Donkin Reserve is truly one of the most iconic sites (and sights) in Port Elizabeth and has recently been names one of Nelson Mandela Bay's Top 10 tourism icons.  The pyramid was built as a monument to Lady Elizabeth Donkin (after whom the city was…

The Donkin Reserve flag in perspective

I have posted a couple of pictures in the past that included the enormous flag pole and South African flag standing on the Donkin Reserve and whenever I tell people that the flag is about as big as a tennis court they tend to look at me in disbelief.  Well, viewing the Donkin Reserve from on top of one of the buildings in the city centre the other day I could actually photograph the flag and put it into a better…
