Ready, aim, squirt

Visiting Holmeleigh Farmyard isn't only about feeding the animals.  Kids also get to go on horse rides, tractor rides and see Queenie the cow being milked.  During the milking demonstration kids can also try their hand at milking as well.  Or as in this case, get the milk squirted directly into their mouths.

Seaview Preditor Park walkway

The walkway at Seaview Predator Park (previously known as Seaview Lion Park) takes one over a couple of enclosures with animals in them.  Along the way we saw a bush pig, black panther, meerkats, hyena and lion and tiger cubs to mention a few.  The park is great for local kids who would never be able to see most of these animals in the wild.

Horse riding at Holmeleigh Farmyard

When people get to Holmeleigh Farmyard the first thing that they normally do is to go and feed the animals.  There after the moms (and dads) normally sit down for some coffee and perhaps something to eat while the kids head off to go and play in the big playing area.  There are two other activities that the kids can do.  The one is to go on a tractor trip on the farm while the second is horse rides.  As I've…

Bunny hugger

Drama Princess being a real bunny hugger, literally, at Holmeleigh Farm on a recent promotional visit with Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism and Bay FM.  She absolutely adore animals, doesn't matter if it's her dogs at home, farm animals like these, the donkeys at the East Cape Horse Care Centre or wild animals on game drives at game reserves.

Feeding sheep at Holmeleigh Farmyard

A think a lot of city kids would have benefited from growing up on a farm, being able to play outside all the time, help with the animals, ride on the tractor or the back of the bakkie and eat a lot more health rather than sit inside, watch television, play Playstation and eat junk food.  Ok, so its not that bad, but I for one think that my KidZ, and in particular Drama Princess, would have thrived on a…

Penguin pool

On Saturday I took Chaos Boy and 15, yes 15 of his friends to SAMREC for his 11th birthday party.  Eddie from SAMREC showed them around the centre and told them all about penguins, the ocean and why conservation is so important.  Here they're learning more about the birds in the penguin pool.  Thank goodness we got through the tour with nothing broken cause with this lot anything was possible.

Ice cream combi

Imagine my surprise when I heard a tune from my childhood coming down the road the other day.  Not 80's pop music or anything from a kiddies tv show but the hi-pitched, slightly more than monotone tune of a ice cream truck combi.  I have seen one around town but it was the first time it drove around my neck of the woods. Looking out the window more memories came flooding back as all the neighbourhood kids came running to…

Little trains

On the first Sunday of the month families with young children (mostly but definitively not exclusively) flock to the Port Elizabeth Model Locomotive Society's venue in Fernglen to ride these beautiful little trains.  It only costs R6 per person for a ride which will take you around the yard on a couple of loops, through a tunnel and over the Great Grass River bridge.  There are both miniature diesel as well as steam trains and here two of the steam loco's are…
