Sunrise at Cape Recife Lighthouse

After yesterday's post of the morning light on the ripples at Cape Recife, I realised that I actually hadn't posted the pictures of the real reason I was there for yet. Capturing a couple of photos of sunrise behind the Cape Recife Lighthouse. This pic was taken at 06h00am, about 15 minutes before sunrise This one (which I am blowing up and framing) was taken at 06h15am

Harbour sunrise

I was very fortunate to spend some time with a film crew shooting footage for the FIFA host city profiles to be broadcasted during 2010 recently. I did have to get up really early a couple of mornings as the guys wanted to get various good sunrise locations. This specific morning we were standing on the Settlers Freeway looking out over the harbour at sunrise. I posted a couple of similar shots I took from here a few of days…

SAMREC

I popped down to SAMREC in the Cape Recife Nature Reserve the other day to have a look at their new facilities. The South African Marine Rehabilitation Centre, SAMREC, has built a rehabilitation centre at Cape Recife to care for the sick and injured Marine Life of Algoa Bay and neighbouring coast line. Although they will specialise in marine birds, they will also rescue and look after mammals if it is required of them (and obviously if their facilities allow…

Dodd’s Farm

After spending last Sunday morning in Settlers Park , we headed over to Dodds Farm a little higher up the Baakens Valley in the afternoon. I've been there before, but the Damselfly and the Rugrats hadn't. Its also on the banks of the Baakens River with cliffs and lots of trees. And best of all, like Settlers Park, its a stone's throw from the suburbs.

Settlers Park scenes

These are some of the scenes we encountered in Settlers Park on Sunday. It is hard to believe that this is in the heart of Port Elizabeth only a stone's throw away from the suburbs.

I want to head back to Settlers Park…

For most of the event I used the camera of the company I work for, but I did get a couple of shots with my own one as well. The Minister of Tourism, Marthinus van Schalkwyk, visited Port Elizabeth today to launch Nelson Mandela Bay's 2010 Visitor Information Centres (VICs). The three world class visitor and tourism centres will form part of the legacy…

Candelabra Flower

The Candelabra Flower is found in grasslands and is quite wide spread in summer rainfall areas. Unfortunately people pick them in the wild as the flower is quite striking and it never gets a chance to sow its seeds. The flower grows up to 70 centimeters high from a bulb. It normally flowers in the summer months where after fruit develops on the tips of the flower stalks. When they dry out they form a tumbleweed and spreads its seeds.

Storms River Bridge

The arch bridge over the Storms River in the Tsitsikamma was completed in 1958 and formed a major link in the National Route N2 between George and Port Elizabeth. The bridge is one of four great arch bridges crossing the deep gorges of the Tsitsikamma and is about 120 meters high. The river itself is a very short river and is only about 40 km in length. It has a big catchment area in the Tsitsikamma mountains and can rise…
