The Public Library renovation finally got going

The historic Port Elizabeth Public Library in the city centre has been closed to the public for over three years now with promises of renovations but excuses of no budget.  Well, if you had to pass the library today you won't be able to see the scene in the photo.  It is because the library has been closed off and work seem to have finally started.  Or at least I hope.  An article in the Herald about two weeks ago…

Tramways Building mural

On passing through Lower Valley Road today I decided to sop and have a closer look at the new mural that has been put up at the Tramways Building.  The mural, in black and white, depicts scenes and items linked to the harbour, South End and Central.  Included are lots of harbour cranes, trams, city scapes, the Donkin Reserve with the Great Flag and the Grey Institute, birds, a boat and even the St Peter's Church ruins.

Coega wind turbine

Before all these wind farm that have been going up at Jbay, the Tsitsikamma, Blue Horizon Bay and on the Addo Road there was only one.  The very first wind turbine to be erected in the area was the one close to the N2 in the Coega Industrial Development zone.  One that's still standing all by it's lonesome self.  I took a drive through the IDZ today and decided to snap a pic of it.

Donkin Village redevelopment

I met up with a few friends for coffee over lunch time at the new coffee shop at the Donkin Village.  I've seen the work being done on the Donkin Street Houses but this was the first time I got to see the development from the back.  I really think once the work is done the whole Donkin Village precinct is going to look very nice.  Already it has drawn in a whole host of tenants making it quite a…

Bay West Development

Installing the new Boardwalk fountain

Work on the new 5 star Boardwalk Hotel and the Nelson Mandela Bay International Convention Centre is at an advanced state with the opening date of 14 December approaching fast.  I got a preview of the convention centre a week or so ago and its looking stunning.  Another new feature at the Boardwalk after the opening will be a multi media fountain in the Boardwalk lake.  The fountain's mechanics arrived not to long ago and they are busy installing it with…

Grand Hotel from the lighthouse

The original house where the Grand Hotel in Central stands today was built in 1867.  By 1885 the house was extended to Whites Road and the owner, Kames Brister, advertised the house as to let with 24 rooms.   Shortly after on 15 October 1885 Arnold Lipman opened the Grand Hotel.  The hotel has been taken over by new owners and is currently being renovated and is in the process to be turned into the first "green hotel" in Port Elizabeth.

Rising Boardwalk development

The new 5 star hotel and conference centre development at the Boardwalk Casino and Entertainment Complex is starting to take shape very nicely.  Walking in from the main car park last weekend I noticed that the new building has now risen above the rest of the Boardwalk.  There are exciting times ahead as far as conferencing goes once the new conference centre is open.
