Dolphins on the beachfront

I don't think people living in Port Elizabeth always realize how special Algoa Bay is.  African penguins, visiting whale (and sometimes even Orcas), dolphins, sardine run starting off our shores, different shark species, scuba diving, great fishing and so much more.  Algoa Bay is home to a couple of species of dolphins and you see pods of Bottlenose Dolphins swimming along our beachfront on just about a daily basis.Driving along Marine Drive from the Boardwalk towards town I spotted a…

Kings Beach and Fence surf spot

I wonder how many PE people have ever walked all the way down Kings Beach right up to the harbour wall.  I did it a little while ago on a beautiful day and took this picture looking back along the beach from on top of the wall.Right next to the harbour wall is a surf spot called Fence.  Why is it called Fence?  The answer I got from local surf blog Millers Local.Back before all the sand built up against…

Surf safe and avoid being hit

Usually the rules of surfing are unwritten rules as far as I understand.  Something you have to know before you hit the waves so that you don't get hit by another surfer's board... of fist.  But just in case you would like to read some of these they are posted along the beachfront like this one on the boardwalk at Lovers Lane.

A Boardwalk snap

It isn't always easy to maintain the daily pace of Port Elizabeth Daily Photo especially if I've been as busy as I have been the last few weeks.  I have travelled quite a lot for work and because of that I have picked up a lot of material for The Firefly Photo Files.  Unfortunately I haven't had much leisure time around PE lately which means I have well and truly ran out of pictures now.  I don't want to falter…

Boardwalk fountains (in blue)

I'm currently in Durban at Tourism Indaba promoting the Eastern Cape, learning, observing and networking.  Unfortunately I also just realized that I have very much run out of pictures thanks to all the travelling I have been doing lately.  So I trawled through my mobile and found a couple of pics to share with you over the next few days.  The Boardwalk Fountain Spectacular has become a must see for all visitors to Port Elizabeth.  This weekend the Democratic Alliance's national…

Where did Pollok Beach get its name?

Have you ever wondered where Pollok Beach got its name from?  For a start, it is supposed to be spelled Pollok without the "c" so it definitely wasn't named after Graham Pollock.  I found the source of the name on the Millers Local blog.  Pollok Beach was named after the Pollok Hotel that used to stand where the present Summerseas is today.  The Pollok Hotel later became the old Summerstrand Hotel which was demolished and made way for Summerseas.  The original building dated back to the 1890’s, when…

Enjoying the beach before winter

I took a walk along the beachfront during lunch time one day last week.  Autumn is my favorite time of the year.  The edge is off the summer heat and even though the evenings are starting to get slightly colder, winter isn't quite here yet.  The best part for me about this time of the year is the fact that we have very little wind.  Something always welcome here in the Bay.  While heading back towards Hobie Beach I spotted…

Tourism Ambassadors

Last Sunday while in the Kings Beach parking area after a walk on the beachfront, I spotted a group of youngsters with orange bibs that had TOURISM AMBASSADOR on it.  I was curious and snapped a picture of them as they passed with the idea of asking my friends at Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism what it was about.  The one guy saw me and came over to chat and offer some information.  Turns out that they are part of a…

The Humewood Slipway

The Humewood Slipway must surely be as well known a beachfront landmark as Shark Rock Pier is.  The difference being that most people probably don't know what it actually is.  The iron and cement structures just of Humewood Beach used to be the city's dry dock used for boat repairs and service before the harbor was built in the 1930's.  These days is doesn't serve any shipping purpose anymore but has become a man made reef attracting fish which in…
