Bird Rock and Lovers Lane

Bird Rock is a well known landmark between Hobie Beach and Pollok Beach, named so because there are always gulls and cormorants sitting on it.  The paved road and parking area is called lovers lane.  No need to explain that really.

Ships in the Bay

A navy ship busy leaving Algoa Bay while a number of big ships wait in the background to enter either the Port Elizabeth or Coega Harbours.

Diving lessons

I'm a qualified scuba diver but I haven't "blown bubbles" as they say for probably 10 years.  So I was very excited when Ocean Divers International (ODI) invited a couple of us from the office for an educational.  Two of us had dived before while the other four were all virgin divers.  It was such an amazing experience getting back in the pool with the full kit on again and brushing up on the skills.  The next day we headed out to sea…

Storm over Algoa Bay

I visited Cape Recife Nature Reserve a little while ago and there was a bit of a storm brewing over Algoa Bay.  It made for a nice contrast between the dark clouds and blue sky and a bit of late afternoon light.

Ships ahoy

Rescue exercise

I popped down to the beachfront last weekend to have a look at the guys (and gals) from NSRI Station 6 here in Port Elizabeth doing an airlift rescue exercise. With summer season at hand and more and more boats out there (both commercial as well as recreational), it is important for their guys to be sharp at all times. I have the utmost respect for the NSRI crews as all of them do it purely on a volunteer basis…

Kite surfer

I popped down to the beachfront during lunch time today to get some fresh air. There was a strong south-easterly breeze blowing and looking back over Kings Beach towards the harbour I saw a lone kite surfer making the most of the ideal conditions.

On a clear day…

This is the spectacular view from our daughter's bedroom door in Richmond Hill, on one of those lovely crisp days when it has rained, and cleared and everything is crystal clear. In the foreground you can see the fish farm near the harbour, beyond that a ship approaches port, and beyond that St Croix Island floats on a shimmering horizon. We are actively involved in neighbourhood patrols, spending several hours in the middle of the night each week, trying to…

St Croix Island #3 – Guano

These lonely looking houses on the leeward side of the island were built for guano collectors. This was apparently not a very succesful venture, as the collection of guano was made difficult by the terrain. The smell of the place would have put any normal person off, before they started.
