Forest stream cascade

Beach or Bush? Bush or Beach? That always seem to be the choice when people do these mini surveys on where folk would like to go for their holidays.  I can think of one or two others to add but one that springs to mind immediately is Forest.  What's wrong with a forest holiday? The breeze rustling in the leaves, the birds in the trees, the smell of the damp forest floor, the isolation of a forest trail, greenery all around,…

Mark’s Camp Walkway

Its Saturday afternoon and the weather is perfect in the Bay.  The EP Kings just won the Currie Cup first division, I have my fire going and a couple of t-bones are waiting to go on the coals.  What could be better?  Not much other than perhaps spending this perfect afternoon on the deck at the bottom of this walkway at Mark's Camp at Lalibela Game Reserve.

Fygies between the rocks

Vygies is a type of succulent and most of them are in full flower at the moment.  I found this little clump between the rocks in the Tsitsikamma National Park at the Storms River Rest camp.

Lighthouse renovation

The renovation project on the Cape Recife lighthouse is nearly done with the scaffolding around the lighthouse having been removed and by now the rest are probably gone as well as I took this pic about two weeks ago.  Now I'm just holding thumbs that they will allow visitors to go up the lighthouse again some time soon.

Baba spinnekoppies

Unfinished freeway

The freeway off ramp on Settlers Freeway which goes nowhere.  In yesterday's post on the Green Mosque I mentioned that the mosque was due to be demolished according to the Groups Areas Act and that they wanted a freeway off ramp to run across the land.  This is how close they got to doing it.

Puffadder

A quick trip out on the Elandsrivier road outside Port Elizabeth meant that I had to do a little bit of dirt road that morning.  On the way back I noticed something on the road which looked like a stick and I have it a wide berth not wanting to damage a tyre. As I flew by I noticed the stick wasn't a stick at all but a puffadder crossing the road. The puffadder (Bitis arietans)  is probably one of if not…

The Green Mosque

Residents of Port Elizabeth all know the green mosque next to the Settlers Freewat.  The Masjied-Ul-Aziz, also known as as the Pier Street Mosque or Green Mosque, was officially opened in July 1901.  The mosque was destined to be destroyed by the declaration of the Group Areas Act to make way for a freeway off ramp, but the matter went to the United Nations where Islamic countries prevented its destruction.  The mosque remains in daily use as a place of…

Pink ferns in the forest

If I could go for a walk in an indigenous forest every day I would.  I love the beauty and peacefulness of it and don't think I'll ever be able to get enough for it.  One of the thing that I always find very interesting are the young fern leaves that's coloured pink, something I saw quite a lot of in the Tsitsikamma last week.  I asked somebody in the area once why the young leaves are pink before turning green and…
