Boer War Trenches

I’m always amazed at how many people didn’t know that Port Elizabeth had involvement in the Anglo Boer War even though the war didn’t take place here.  Even less people know that there are old Boer War trenches above the Baakens Valley in Settlers Park where the town guard set up lookout spots on the approach to town.  They can be reached from the How Avenue parking area and via a short walk.

As I understood from the Historical Society the rush to fortify the town was when Jan Smuts came as close as Jansenville but then suddenly turned west. It has always been strange that this was where they started t fortigy the town as a Boer invasion would have held almost half the town beyong this defensive line..!

Imagine sitting in that trench all day (& night) long waiting for the boers to come, or was it the boers waiting for the anglos' to come?
