Checking the Kouga Dam overflowing

A week or two three ago we spent the weekend at Tia Ghee Tented Camp in the Gamtoos Valley and heard that the Kouga Dam was still overflowing after good late winter and spring rains.  We immediately decided to take a drive up to the dam for a look and we definitely weren't disappointed. From the tar road, very close to where it becomes dirt going into the Baviaanskloof, there is a dirt road turnoff to the left and about 7…

Dune coastline aerial

Driving along the N2 from Port Elizabeth to Colchester you pass the Coega harbor and then it's a straight stretch to the Sundays River with not much to see on either side.  Have you ever driven that road and wondered what the coastline between the harbor and Sundays look like? I didn't get to see it up close but I did fly over it (and man was my arms tired - yes, old joke, I know) just after takeoff on our way…

The refurbished Shark Rock Pier

I've been watching people flock to Shark Rock Pier for a walk on it since it reopened last week after a lengthy refurbishment spell.  Do they go and walk on it to see the new wood and cleanly painted railings? Probably.  But they also go and walk on it because of the fact that it is one of Port Elizabeth's iconic attractions and has beautiful views of the surrounding coastline.

City coastline aerial

Last week the Damselfly and I got to fly to Johannesburg for the annual Lilizela Awards of which I was one of the judges. Even though I get to road trip quite often working for ECTOUR, I don't fly nearly as much as I did in my previous job.  When I do and I fly alone, I like an aisle seat but the Damselfly wanted to sit by the window and it gave me the opportunity to snap a few pics…

A wave of pink at the Big Walk for Cancer

This morning the annual Algoa FM Big Walk for Cancer took place from the Boardwalk.  We joined over 10 000 other walkers, most of them in pink, in support of those who are busy fighting cancer, those who are cancer survivors and those who have lost the battle to cancer.  Just about everybody there are family or friends of one of the above so it truly is a very special day.  It took us a good 20 plus minutes just…

Surfing at Pipe

[youtube=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G-yV_gfsZ3o&w=500&h=400]I'm not a surfer.  I've never even had the opportunity to try.  I really enjoy body surfing though but perhaps one day I'll try doing it on a board.  It doesn't mean I don't enjoy watching surfers.  Discovered this video of surfing at Pipe by Grant Beck.

Back to the future on the Mzamba Fossils and Petrified Forest Trail

The Mzamba Fossils and Petrified Forest on the northern Wild Coast has been on my "To Do" list for a long time now.  I just never had chance to visit that part of the Wild Coast yet.  That was until a road trip to Durban had me spending a night at the Wild Coast Sun on the border between the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu Natal.  The first thing I did after checking in was to enquire about going to see the fossils and…

First cricket of the season

Drama Princess is sports mad and very competitive.  In the winter she plays netball and tennis and in summer she does athletics and plays cricket... Yes, you read correctly.  My daughter plays cricket.  She is one of three girls in the Newton Park Primary u/11 team and on Tuesday they played their first game of the season against St Dominic Priory.  I love seeing the reaction of the boys in the other teams when our team arrives.  Not one but three…
