A sad old building

We don’t always show the nicer side of Port Elizabeth and sometimes let the social conscience kick in.
A sad relic from the past is the Victoria Hotel, an art decor style building that has been allowed to decay to such an extent that it has become an uninhabitable shell. Like most of the buildings in Victoria Street its doors have been bricked up to keep out the vagrants and squatters.
Let’s hope that its owner starts doing something about the urban decay he has contributed to.

That is sad, any idea as to why this has happened?

.. Ken Denton … no need to elaborate.

That could be such a beautiful building if restored and used in the right way. May even have the potential to become a hotel again one day when most of the city centre and Central has been rejuvenated. Look what’s happening in Cape Town’s city centre.Ps. I don’t actually know where this is.

Firefly if you come down Donkin Street, turn left into Belmont Terrace (at the Hill Presbytarian Church. The the second street to the right is Victoria. The hotel is about half way down the hill on the right.

Steffe that is what happens when you let you property to the wrong tenants. Unfortunately, the same has happened to many of Ken Denton’s properties. They have become uninhabitable and have been bricked up.It is encouraging to see that he has started restoring some of the buildings.

How sad. I have always loved Central’s hidden Art Deco gems and it’s so deprerssing to see one of them in this state.

Maybe Mr Denton would like to move to Zimbabwe – he’ll be amongst like-minded twits who share his vision on taking Africa back to the stone-ages. TheKing

Hi,I am writing this from Wales, UK. My mum lived at 21 Victoria Street before she left to get married in England. We have no pictures of the houses in Victoria Street before they were demolished. Do any such pictures exist? I would love to know.Michael
