They are currently busy filming Port Elizabeth and surroundings (as well as the rest of South Africa) for Google Street View. I have passed the car once ot twice on the road, but never had my camera at the ready. The other morning the car was parked outside the offices of Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism and I had the chance to photograph it. The guy explained to me how they have been driving all the tarred roads in the city with the camera filming in all directions. He said the South African cities should be up on Google Street View by June or July.

Much of the UK is now on – our local streets must have been filmed about the beginning of June last year judging by some of the event hoardings pictured. Amazing is the many places that have changed since then (shops closed down, new shops opened, old mill totally demolished).
I wish I had caught them when they were around my area! I'm currently house hunting and it has to be one of the best features- so helpful to check out the area without getting in the car and physically looking. Looking forward to having a good snoop around Port Elizabeth!
Not every tarred road in the UK has been photographed but the result is very good and, as suggested, excellent for house hunting or just orientating oneself before a visit. By the way, faces are blanked out to save possible embarrassment. Pick any major city in the UK on 'Google Maps' for a taster.
Thanks for posting that shot. I wasn't home when they came into our street here. My wife was in the garden and she can be seen on Google street view but I had no idea what the camera looks like.
Trust you to capture big brother Google at work. I never saw the google signs on the doors of the car, but did see the vehicle with it “horns” driving in the city.At least it is not a political propaganda machine 🙂
Google took pictures of our block a few years ago. It was after a hurricane. The picture of our house weren't very good. They came back a few months ago and the houses look much better. I can tell the time because of the plants and trees. I looked up the house of my parents and it was a forest – couldn't see anything of the house.
