Start of the Lower Guineafowl Trail

The 7,5 kilometer Lower Guinea Fowl Trail stretches from the 3rd Avenue Dip to Settlers Park.  Although there are several access points onto the trail, the official start is at a parking area right next to the low water bridge in the Dip.

Coastal hiking at St Francis Bay

The St Francis Bay / Cape St Francis area has a number of hiking options and with such a stunning coastline how can it not?  Most of the walks are shorter hikes and include coastal walks like the Blowhole Walk, Bay to Bay Walk, Shark Point Walk, Wild Side Meander and the Two Harbours Walk.  There are also walks through the Irma Booysen Flower Reserve and up into the dune fields at the Sand River.  If you really want to experience the…

Canals, Coastline and Candelabra flowers – Exploring St Francis Bay

We are very fortunate here in Port Elizabeth that we have a number of excellent destinations surrounding us.  This does mean that it isn't always that easy to decide where to go for that much needed weekend break with your loved ones.  Seeing that we can't get away over Easter this year, we decided to have a family weekend away a week or so earlier.  After much deliberation along with outside encouragement and a couple of invitations to visit, we decided to spend the weekend in…

Activities at Sleepy Hollow

We are busy organising Chaos Boy's 13th birthday party and decided to have a day out with his friends at Sleepy Hollow in the Maitland River Valley.  I went to dig out a couple of photos I took at Sleepy Hollow in December when we last popped in there for a visit.  I went for a walk up the river with Drama Princess and she is always willing to play the model if I need one for a photo.  This…

Bushbuck Trail pictorial part 2

Today's post is the second of two picture collages I made after my walk on the Bushbuck Trail in the Island Nature Reserve a while ago.  I posted the first collage yesterday but have to apologise right off the bat.  For some reason I referred to the trail as the Grysbok Trail yesterday and didn't pick it up till a friend phoned me this morning to point it out. How could I mix the names up like that? Who knows. …

The Bushbuck Trail

A little while ago I got to go for a hike on the Bushbuck Trail in The Island Nature Reserve near Seaview.  The Island is located about 25 km from Port Elizabeth and is accessed via the Seaview Road.  The reserve forms a sub section of the Baviaanskloof Mega Reserve and comprises 480 ha of indigenous Alexandria coastal forest boasting tree species such as Outeniqua yellow-wood, white and hard pear as well as white milkwood.   Fauna include small blue duiker, bushbuck, vervet monkey and…

Unique skull cache

While out there in search of Geocaches one can find all kinds of containers.  Bison tubes, pill bottles, clip lock lunchboxes, plastic peanut butter bottles, ammo cans, etc, etc, etc. Some Geocachers put in a lot of effort to create really unique and memorable caches.  One of these I found in the Baakens Valley close to the Lower Guinea Fowl Trail under the fynbos a year or so ago.  The container consisted of a pill container nicely fitted in a…

A walk to Salt River Mouth at Natures Valley

The Garden Route has some excellent hiking trails.  The Otter, Outeniqua and Tsitsikamma trails are epic and will take you a couple of days covering long distance lugging along backpacks while short loops like Storms River Mouth, The Big Tree and Garden of Eden will use up an hour of your time with only a camera over your shoulder before heading off to your next destination.  These aren't the only trails though and whichever trail you choose will depend on where you…

Bushbuck Trail Beacon

On my recent hike on the Bushbuck Trail in The Island Nature Reserve our turning point was a trig beacon near the western side of the reserve.  There wasn't much around the trig beacon except for the coastal bush to make a good photo out of it but I took one anyway. I climbed to the top to have a look at the surrounding view and decided to take a shadow selfie with me and the trig beacon. Somewhat weird? Probably.  But don't judge…
