Port Elizabeth’s beautiful wild coastline

One of the things that Port Elizabeth and Nelson Mandela Bay is very proud of and which gets promoted by Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism often is that the metro has 40 kilometers of beautiful white sandy beaches ideal for swimming, long walks and building sand castles.  But what is in between because the metro has about an eighty kilometer stretch of coastline from Van Stadens River mouth to Sundays River Mouth when you exclude the area covered in dolosse between…

Beachfront walkway

If you continue along the beachfront walkway past the lollipop beacon onto the boardwalk it feels like the coastline suddenly transforms.  You feel just that little bit further away from the city.  I did it during the week early one morning and there wasn't another soul around until I encountered another walker on the way back to my car, but if you feel wary doing it when it's this quiet, do it on a Saturday morning when there are more…

Chokka boat lights off Seaview

Drama Princess went to sleep over at a friend's house in Seaview a few nights ago.  We dropped her off a little late and it was dark by the time we got there.  I just love the view from Seaview over the ocean.  The bright lights are chokka boats fishing off the coast.  In the background are white and red lights.  The white lights is Jeffrey's Bay while the red lights are from the JBay Wind Farm turbines.

The Noordhoek dune field

Standing at the view point on Marine Drive close to Noordhoek looking back at Cape Recife you can see a section of sand dunes in the middle of the coastline.  These dunes form part of the Noordhoek dune field, one of three driftsand bypass systems that used to take sand into Algoa Bay.  The other two are the Drifsands and Cape Recife dune systems. The main sand bypass, known as Dritsands, covered the whole area between Schoenmakerskop and Summerstrand.  In the…

Wildside’s rocky coastline

Port Elizabeth's southern coastline is generally referred to as the Wildside.  The coastline is stunning on the best of days, but if the prevailing south-westerly really pumps and the rollers break white water on the mostly rocky coastline, then it's no surprise why it's called the Wildside.

Paddling on the PE beachfront

[youtube=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DsGP32pagw8&w=500&h=400]Port Elizabeth offers so many water sport and activity opportunities.  We really are super fortunate to live on Algoa Bay with everything it offers.  Check out this YouTube video of MyLifeInTransit and his dad going paddling along the Port Elizabeth beachfront.  Along the way they came across a pod of dolphins which can only be described as a magical experience.

Splish Splash

A late Saturday afternoon walk along the beachfront and the water looked very inviting.  Unfortunately we were on our way to friends for dinner and I didn't have my costume on.  I did have my camera though.

Lauries Bay cottages

The cottages along the coast at Lauries Bay near Kini Bay.  The cottages, or shacks as a lot of owners refer to them, stand on private land and if you buy one you only have limited rights and not ownership of the land on which your cottage stands.  The cottages are mostly self sufficient as there are no water or electricity supply to the area.
