Maitland River Mouth

With all the recent flooding in and around Port Elizabeth all the rivers in the area came down in flood.  The Maitland River which is normally nothing more than a trickle was no different and the aftermath can still clearly be seen at the river mouth with debris lying all over the show.  You can also see how wide the river ran into the sea when it flooded.

View from Barnacles’ deck

Port Elizabeth has a number of restaurants with great sea views, one of the Barnacles in Seaview.  The view from the deck at Barnacles overlook the rugged coastline and you often spot whales (in season) and dolphins going by.  My visit unfortunately coincided with a cold front so it wasn't ideal weather to sit outside and enjoy the scenery.

Nature reserve gully

We took the Kidz and the Worse (our dachshunds) for a walk on the first section of the Sacramento Trail a couple of weekends ago.  This little gully is just past the Sacramento monument just as you pass into the nature reserve.

Fresh water between the dunes

Standing on top of the sand dunes at Colchester and looking towards the ocean you will spot what looks like oases. (One oasis, many oases.  Something I didn't know).  But this isn't a desert so its not oases.  Although its kinda is.  Fresh water falls on the sand dunes in the form of rain (duh!).  The fresh water then sinks away and appears again in low lying areas between the sand dunes.  In these low lying areas you will find…

Thunderbolt Reef

The ocean off Cape Recife churns white, specially at low tide, as the waves hit Thunderbolt Reef.  This notorious reef has claimed numerous ships over the years and was named after the HMS Thunderbolt which struck this massive reef in 1847.  The Cape Recife Lighthouse was built in 1851 to warn ships of the eminent danger but even with it's presence close by ships accidents have still happened.  But its not all bad news.  The area around the reef is a very…

No Swimming… just yet

Summer is coming and the seasons are changes but its not quite ideal swimming weather yet.  The lifeguards are only coming on duty a bit closer to the season so the "No Swimming" signs are still up on Pollok Beach.

The top of the trail

Most people hiking along the Sacramento Trail between Schoenmakerskop and Sardinia Bay follows the path along the shore line in both directions not really knowing how stunning the views are from the top trail.  I had taken the bottom path many times before and got to take the top path for the first time while doing the trail with some colleagues recently.  The views are absolutely amazing.

Filming the dunes

Today's post is a follow-on after yesterday's showing the camera man from Real Goboza filming on the Sundays River Ferry.  After the ferry stopped at the sand dunes I climbed the dunes with him in the hope that he will do some filming up there as well.  He just could not believe the views from the top and shot it at all angles and in all directions.  It really is a stunning view.

Can’t wait for summer

Is it just me or is it starting to get slightly warmer?  I know winter isn't over just yet but its good to be able to get up in the morning without immediately grabbing a jacket.  Can't wait for those lazy sunny summer days and long walks on the beach over weekends.
