Looking at the Boardwalk Hotel from Shark Rock Pier
I've been watching people flock to Shark Rock Pier for a walk on it since it reopened last week after a lengthy refurbishment spell. Do they go and walk on it to see the new wood and cleanly painted railings? Probably. But they also go and walk on it because of the fact that it is one of Port Elizabeth's iconic attractions and has beautiful views of the surrounding coastline.
Shark Rock Pier was reopened yesterday after extensive renovations. I decided to take a quick walk down at lunch time to go and have a look. The pier looks great after having all the steel and wood fixed up or replaced and it is ready for the many visitors coming to the city this coming season.
Regular Port Elizabeth Daily Photo follower Gerhard Burger sent me this picture of a ship framed by Shark Rock Pier last week for that day when I am in need of something to post. Well, today is that day. I seriously need to get out there with my camera more. Strangely enough he took this picture on the same mor ning that we walked our sausages down on the beachfront so we could have been standing there next to each…
This is a bit of an unusual view of Shark Rock Pier. I know it's a view a lot of people have seen before, but if you zoom in with the camera over a distance this angle puts Kings Beach and the city centre right behind the pier.
As one who works in the tourism industry I love seeing planes flying in over the Port Elizabeth beachfront. I don't just see it as a plane going to the Port Elizabeth Airport. I see it as visitors coming to Port Elizabeth to experience this beautiful place and everything it and the surrounding areas have to offer.
Port Elizabeth has 40 kilometers of sandy beaches and that isn't counting the rocky shoreline in-between. Our main beachfront is our pride and joy with beaches like Kings Beach, Humewood, Hobie and Pollok Beach attracting thousands of visitors every week. And that's just the locals. I wonder how many people remember what Hobie Beach looked like before Shark Rock Pier was built in the 90's. A rocky little beach famous for the fact that many people launched their hobie cats…
https://youtube.googleapis.com/v/fuTKcAdzXgY&source=udsI spotted this timelapse by Chris Wright on Facebook the other day and just had to share it with you. The timelapse was put together from webcam footage taken between 31 December 2014 and 2 January 2015 and shows the New Year's Eve and New Year's Day activity on Hobie Beach.
On Friday I attended a tourism marketing workshop at the Beach Hotel and afterwards a couple of us went for coffee at The Verandah. I was sitting with my back to the beach but still had a nice reflective view of Shark Rock Pier.
Shark Rock Pier really is one of those iconic Port Elizabeth landmarks. What makes it such an interesting photographic subject is the fact that its not just part of the city's beautiful beachfront, but also its changing moods depending what the weather and tides as doing. In this case mid morning on a calm and sunny winters day.
