Aloes silhouette

The aloes are in full bloom at the moment and an late afternoon walk along the Aloe Trail in Bluewater Bay gave me the opportunity to grab this picture along the way

Wildside walk

Most people know the Sacramento Trail at Schoenmakerskop but isn't very familiar with the nearby Fynbos Trail.  Out looking for a Geocache last weekend I ventured onto part of the trail and snapped this pic looking west towards Schoenies.

Flamingo take-off

The Flamingo Trail in the Zwartkops Nature Reserve is ideal to get a little bit closer to birds after which the trail was name.  I don't know why but I am always amazed to see the flamingos on the estuary.  Not sure why cause its not like I've never seen them there before.  On a walk along the trail these flamingos decided to take off as we passed and I got a couple of shots of them "walking on water".

Van Stadens protea

The Van Stadens Wildflower Reserve just west of Port Elizabeth is probably the best spot around the city to see a wide range of protea species grow in the wild.  The reserve offers visitors two different trail options with a couple of stunning view sights over the Van Stadens gorge.  South Africa's national flower, the King Protea, is amongst the flowers that can be seen in the reserve.

Grysbok Reserve road

Very few people know that the South Campus of the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University is situated on a nature reserve.  The Grysbos Nature Reserve can be accessed (with permission) from the campus along this road.  I went to a meeting at the campus and snapped the pic over the gate on my way past.

Settlers Park view

The view of Settlers Park with the Baakens River flowing through it from the How Avenue parking area of the park stays one of my favorite views in Port Elizabeth.

Dodds Farm view

Dodds Farm is part of the Baakens Valley and can be reached from the bottom of 9th Avenue in Walmer.  It's a beautiful spot that could perhaps do with a bit of maintenance, bush clearing and grass cutting, but ideal for a picnic and some quiet time.  The Baakens River flows right through Dodds Farm and there are several trails in the area, amongst them the Guinea Fowl trail and some trail running and mountain biking tracks.

Swartkops River and salt pans

The Swartkops River and surrounding estuary is a wonderful place, even with it's pollution problems.  It's an amazing birding wetland and a major salt producing area.  Looking at the picture the actual river is in the background on the left while the big channel through the middle of the picture is part of the salt pan system used by salt producers.  The vegetated area to the right of the river is part of the Zwartkops Nature Reserve.
