Looking up on Route 67

The Tower Sculpture at the bottom of the Donkin Reserve is one of the more peculiar yet interesting art pieces forming part of Route 67.  The piece was designed by The Workplace Architects and acts as a beacon to announce the journey through the Donkin Reserve.  It can be found at the start of the winding path and responds to its surrounding elements using the sun and wind to bring it to life.  For this picture I stood underneath it…

Walking past the Voting Line

I just can't get enough of Route 67 and all it's art pieces.  There are so many possibilities for photographers looking for interesting angles and subjects.  The Voting Line is one of my favourite pieces and for some reason I've only photographed it looking towards the lighthouse and pyramid.  Visiting the other day there was a group of people walking past as I was standing by the base of the flag pole and I got to snap it from a…

The best view in PE

What is the best viewpoint in Port Elizabeth?  In my opinion its the view from the top of the Donkin Lighthouse.  This is the view across the Donkin Reserve showing the King Edward Hotel, Grey Institute, Donkin Street Houses and some of the Route 67 art pieces, including the 65m high flagpole.  To think of it, I should have taken a panorama towards the city centre side as well. Next time, I promise.

Mosaic fun

The 470 square meter mosaic next to the Donkin Memorial (pyramid) is fast becoming one of the most popular art pieces on Route 67.  People are finding all kinds of fun ways to take photos of it.  This group of school kids were lying down on the circles for pictures when I was on top of the lighthouse the other day.  Unfortunately by the time I got my camera out they were getting up already

193 years of being called PE

If you could go back 193 years in time to this day in 1820, you would see the arrival of Sir Rufane Donkin, Acting Governor of the Cape Colony, in Algoa Bay to oversee the arrival and settling of the British Settlers.  You would also see him look around at the beautiful bay with the small settlement on the coastline and name the town in honour of his late wife, Lady Elizabeth, who died not long before of fever in India.  He also proclaimed the…

Route 67 art

I know I often post pictures of the art pieces which form part of Route 67 on the Donkin, but with 67 art pieces around plus the history and beautiful surrounds I just can't help throwing in one every now and then.  These are some of the art pieces that was installed next to the mosaic steps leading up towards the flag.  Most of them seems to have been taken down since I took this picture. Not sure if they…

TGIF – Late afternoon on the Donkin

TGIF.  The week is over.  Not just one week but actually two that just flowed into each other as I attended Tourism Indaba that included this past weekend.  Indaba was good, not just from a destination marketing point of view but also from a personal one.  Amongst others I got to attend the SA Tourism #MeetSouthAfrica bloggers conference and picked up a lot of tips on social media attached to a travel blog.  Some of these I really need to concentrate…

Lighthouse shadow

Some people are fascinated by shadows and shadow photography.  I like reflections better, but for those shadow people out there, here is a pic of the Donkin Lighthouse's shadow taken from the top of the lighthouse.
