Visitors to the Oceanarium at Bayworld will find a tank with baby sea turtles in it. Most of these were hatchlings that got washed up after storms forced them out the warm Mosambique current and into Algoa Bay. They're often in cold shock due to the sudden change in water tempreture that also compromise their condition.
If you had a time machine and could choose any time to go back to, what time would you choose? I think most children would choose to go back to the time of the dinosaurs. Bayworld gives visitors a opportunity to get to know some moving life sized dinosaurs fairly up close and personal. Amongst them a life size T-Rex.
The Bayworld complex is currently undergoing some exciting renovations in the Snake Park and old Oceanarium which will open to the public in September. Another addition to the complex will be a brand new craft shop and coffee bar opening in August. The Lizard Coffee Bar will be just that, a coffee bar serving coffee and other hot drinks. I was at the launch of the Mandela Bay Museums Forum in the craft shop on Friday and especially liked the sitting area for…
The artwork on the outside wall of Bayworld was redone just before the 2010 FIFA World Cup and takes in a nautical theme. The artwork was sponsored by Coca Cola. Just for those who doesn't know, Bayworld consists of the Port Elizabeth Museum, Oceanarium and Snake Park.
A week or so ago I posted a pic of one of the Cape Fur Seals at Bayworld. Sharing their enclosure with them is this Subantarctic Fur Seal.
One of the Cape Fur Seals at the Bayworld Oceanarium grooming himself. Bayworld has a small colony of Cape Fur and Sub antarctic Fur Seals. The seals make up an important part of Bayworld's educational display every day with Kelpie the seal being one of the facilities' stars.
Bayworld series #10: Today is the last of my series of pics from the Bayworld complex on the Port Elizabeth beachfront. It shows Drama Princess looking down the barrel of one of the bronze cannons that was retrieved from the wreck of the Sacramento near Schoenmakerskop. The Sacramento exhibit can be seen in the Shipwreck Hall.
Bayworld series #9: Bayworld currently has a temporary exhibition called Africa's Lost World. It features a number of mechanical dinosaurs that move and make dino noises. Here Drama Princess is admiring the huge T Rex as its growling at her.
Bayworld series #8. One of the fairly new activities that take place at the Oceanarium is the Penguin Walk. It happens after the feeding session when some of the penguins are taken for a walk by the staff. Visitors are asked to stay on the grass and not get too close to the birds, but it does give one the opportunity to see them from a bit closer than in the enclosure.
