Cape Recife lookout

The view from the top of the Fortress Observation Post (FOP) in Cape Recife looking west.  The Cape Recife FOP was one of three built at the start of the Second World War as part of the Port Elizabeth harbour defences and acted as lookouts for enemy boats, subs and planes.

British Fort at Cogmans Kloof

On top of the Cogmans Kloof tunnel outside Montagu stands an old English fort built by the British in 1899 during the Anglo Boer War.  The fort has a great view of the approaching road and kloof through the mountains and one can immediately see why the British chose the spot.  To get to the top there is a steep little path from across the road from the parking area and after a couple of minutes of huffing and puffing you get…

Liver, onions and roosterkoek

I feel like a typical township lunch of liver, onions and roosterkoek today and decided to go and dig out this picture I have posted previously on The Firefly Photo Files.  A couple of us ventured to a township eatery a little while ago under the guidance of one of my black colleagues.  He knows all the best spots and took us for a scrumptious lunch of beef stew followed by liver and onions served with roosterkoek and ice cold…

Cogmans Kloof

Cogmans Kloof outside Montagu is one of the famous landmarks on Route 62 through the Klein Karoo.  The Cogmans Kloof Pass passes through a poort (a poort being defined as a path through a mountain range) which runs through the Langeberg between Ashton and Montagu.  The first white farmers in the area were allocated farms from 1725 onwards and the original road through the poort was a dangerous one alongside the Kingna River which incorporates eight hazardous drifts.  To get around Kalkoenkrantz…

Scottish Cemetery

Port Elizabeth has some wonderful historic cemeteries, one of them the Scottish Cemetery in St Georges Park.  The first cemetery in Port Elizabeth was St Mary's Cemetery which started as a military cemetery, but after the arrival of the British Settlers it was assigned to the St Mary's Collegiate Church and opened for the burial of all Christians in the town.  The growth of the town increased the demands placed upon St Mary's Cemetery and allocations of small pieces of land on…

Conservatory fountain

The Pearson Conservatory is really looking stunning since its refurb two years ago.  Gaelyn from Geogypsy is on tour through South Africa and I was very fortunate that she spent the day with me yesterday.  She had seen most of the places we visited on PE Daily Photo before, but seeing it in real life is just so much more special.  St Georges Park and the Conservatory was one of the places I took her to and she was amazed at how beautiful…

Orchards and Kannas

Driving along the wine farms between Robertson and Bonnievale recently there were a lot of orchards with Kanna flowers growing between it and the road.  I know in some areas they plant roses next to the orchards to warn the farmer of deceases but I'm not sure if the Kannas are for the same purpose or just to look beautiful.  Because they did look beautiful if nothing else.

Sea monster

Could it be that there are sea monsters in the ocean around Port Elizabeth?  Spotted this creature moving about in the waves just off Cape Recife. Immediately grabbed my camera and ... It didn't move off. Stayed in the same spot in the waves. Mmmmm, disappointment.  Its only the remains of a shipwreck visible at low tide.
