The old Gamtoos River Bridge

When the first Dutch farmers arrived in the Kouga and Gamtoos region they had to travel upstream some distance to cross over the Gamtoos River. In the mid 1800's a pontoon was used to convey traffic across the Gamtoos River.  The ferry was close to the Gamtoos River Hotel, and was owned by the late Mr. G. D. Smith, of Nocton Farm.  The problem was that this very primitive method of crossing a broad tidal river was frequently a source of much annoyance and delay, owing…

Boerewors Roll queue

The guys who do the most business at any festival or show are the guys with the food stalls.  This was again evident at Art in the Park this past Sunday.  As lunch time started to come around the queues at the food stalls started to grow. Pancakes, burgers, springrolls and specifically this stall selling boerewors and russian rolls.

Art in the Park stall

If it's the last Sunday of the month it means that its time for Art in the Park and when the weather is beautiful then it is the perfect excuse for a Sunday morning outing to St Georges Park.  I have to admit that Art in the Park isn't anywhere close to what it used to be, but it doesn't mean that people support it any less.  I did hear two stall holders chatting about the fact that there are…

Buffeljagsrivier farmstall dam

A sunny blue sky day. So typical of South Africa, specially in summer.  A grumbling tummy made me pull over at a farm stall at Buffeljagsrivier near Swellendam to look for a pie and something to drink.  Behind the farm stall was a big piece of grass with this farm dam and it is where I snapped this picture.  Green surroundings with a beautiful blue reflection and mountains in the background.  Makes one want to spend more time, but the road was calling.

Sand driving at Brakkeduine

When the South African government banned driving on beaches both the angling and 4x4 fraternities took a big knock.  The anglers couldn't go as far along the beaches as they used to or had to find overland shortcuts while the 4x4 okes had to stick to mountain trails and off road paths.  There is one place I know of where the boys can test their toys and sand driving skills though.  Brakkeduine close to Oyster Bay and St Francis Bay, making it close to Port…

Walmer sunset by Shefetswe

Today's post features a photo by guest photographer Geoff Applewhite aka Shefetswe.  Geoff is one of my fellow Geocachers and went on a cache trip around town with Grannynasty and Speedbird yesterday afternoon.  While the other two were logging a cache next to the Baakens Valley in Walmer, Geoff ducked away to snap a pic of the beautiful sunset.

The Hankey Sundial

Just outside the town of Hankey in the Gamtoos Valley visitors will find the biggest sundial in the Southern Hemisphere.  Kids will always be kids and the monkey comes out of them when they see something they can climb.  It was no different when Drama Princess decided to see how far she could go up the Hankey Sundial.  The sundial was built by local farmer Mr Dirk Schellingerhout in 1989 to commemorate the town's 160th anniversary.  It is located at the entrance to…
