The church in Salem

A quick detour from the N2 between Nanaga and Grahamstown to Kenton-on-Sea took me through the village of Salem for the first time in ages last week.  I didn't have time to explore much but I did stop for a quick photo of the front of the church while parked next to the cricket field. Salem was founded by the Sephton party who formed part of the 1820 British Settlers who settled in this district.  The name comes from the bible and means "peace" with…

Sunday lunch at Blackbeard’s

The Damselfly is busy getting ideas for their office Christmas lunch at the end of the year so we went to try out Blackbeard's Restaurant at the Chapman Hotel as part of her research.  At R120 per adult and R75 for a child it must be one of the more affordable Sunday buffets around.  The starters were a choice of three different soups - butternut, sweet potato mushroom and a tomato based soup.  The main was a choice (or some of…

The Port Elizabeth Savanna Before and After Party

A dark Edward Hotel

It was sad going past the Edward Hotel the other night and seeing that the whole place is dark except for the lights along the front.  I wonder what's going to happen to the place or is it a case of nobody really caring at the moment?

A perfect moring on the Wild Coast

You know when you've experienced something that you just want to share over and over again?  My Wild Coast trip was like that (heck, sometimes I feel every trip I go on is like that) and I wish I could transport you all to the day I spend at Wavecrest Hotel and getting up to a perfect windless morning.  Getting up just before sunset with not a ripple on the lagoon. Ahhh, absolute bliss.

Lifesavers in action

I made a quick stop in Bluewater Bay a week or so ago on my way out to Addo.  While taking a couple of photos at the Swartkops River Mouth a team from the Bluewater Bay Surf Lifesaving Club was called out to assist with an incident on the river.  They quickly towed the waveski out to the water and two lifeguards set off upstream. I don't think guys like these get enough credit for what they do.

Where did Coffee Bay get it’s name?

Have you ever wondered where Coffee Bay got its name from?  Its not like the Wild Coast is a coffee growing area and beer is a lot more popular around there than coffee anyway. Way back in 1893 on a... this part of the story I don't know so I will give you a couple of options 1. dark stormy night 2. quiet fog covered morning3. bright sunshine day (with the sun shining in the captain's eyes) ... a cargo ship with a…
