The Humewood Slipway

The Humewood Slipway must surely be as well known a beachfront landmark as Shark Rock Pier is.  The difference being that most people probably don't know what it actually is.  The iron and cement structures just of Humewood Beach used to be the city's dry dock used for boat repairs and service before the harbor was built in the 1930's.  These days is doesn't serve any shipping purpose anymore but has become a man made reef attracting fish which in…

Canals, Coastline and Candelabra flowers – Exploring St Francis Bay

We are very fortunate here in Port Elizabeth that we have a number of excellent destinations surrounding us.  This does mean that it isn't always that easy to decide where to go for that much needed weekend break with your loved ones.  Seeing that we can't get away over Easter this year, we decided to have a family weekend away a week or so earlier.  After much deliberation along with outside encouragement and a couple of invitations to visit, we decided to spend the weekend in…

Kings Beach activities

Standing at McArthur pool on Saturday during Ironkids I tried out the zoom lens on my new camera watched some activity on Kings Beach.  I was amazed at all the different things happening.  People swimming, a couple of kite boarders, two guys on SUPs, body boarders, knee board paddlers, kids building sand castles, people having a tan and a few folk just going for a walk.  All of that with lots of sail boats out in the bay. Truly a…

Drinks overlooking the pool

On Saturday during Ironkids at the McArthur pool complex my eye kept on wandering to the folk having drinks on the deck at Cubana.  It must be one of the best spots for a drink with its view of the pools and Kings Beach beyond.

Kinkelbos roadworks sunset

Driving back from East London to Port Elizabeth last week I got stuck at the road works between Kinkelbos and Colchester.  I don't allow road works to faze me anymore and always get out, lean against the car and enjoy whatever scenery there is.  This time around the sun was setting in the west with some spectacular clouds and I grabbed my camera for a quick stop-go roadside photo shoot.  You should have seen the sky 10 minutes later as I…

Witnessing the impossible on the Ironman running leg

After spending 5 hours next to the road supporting the Ironman competitors on the cycle leg and popping home to do a couple of things like mow the lawn, we headed down to the beachfront after sunset to cheer on the runners.  My mouth just hangs open year after year watching people who have already swum 3,8 km and cycled 180 km still run 42,2 km as if its just a jog around the block.  You can see some of…

Supporting the Ironman cyclists

Today is Ironman Sunday, one of the biggest sporting days in Port Elizabeth.  We decided to spend most of the day supporting these inspirational sportsmen and women and headed out early to cheer on the guys and girls on the cycle leg on the intersection of Buffelsfontein and Walter Road in Charlo. This is the chasing pack of 11, a couple of minutes behind the first four on the second cycle loop.  We spent about 5 hours out there and…

Drama Princess, you’re an Ironkid

It's Ironman weekend in Port Elizabeth and the vibe in town around this iconic event is absolutely mind blowing.  In addition to the main event on Sunday, there are also two events taking place on Saturday.  First off was the Corporate Challenge followed by Ironkids in the afternoon.  Drama Princess entered Ironkids after missing last year and this year had to do the slightly longer 100 meter swim and 2 km run as she just turned ten and thus moved…
