Windpomp

One of the iconic rural countryside objects of South Africa is the windpomp (wind pump).  Windpompe is used to extract water from boreholes and can be found (working or not) on all our highways and byways around South Africa’s countryside.  This one I photographed on one of the game reserves just outside Port Elizabeth.

Windmills like that are almost a thing of the past here in the States. They are very practicle and photogenic. Now they are showing up again in a more modern version to make power instead of drawing water.Sure looks like you had a great time in the Karoo Jonker.

  2. What a wonderful old farmhouse too Jonker. I could sit on that stoep for hours.

Haven't heard that name before. Nice looking windpompe.

I liked seeing the windmills, as we call them, around the rural countryside of ZA. Not too many left in rural America.

We saw some of those when we were there, and I was so surprised. Guess I thought they were mostly in the western U.S. so it seemed odd to me to see them in South Africa! Beautiful photo.

We even have a festival with the windpomp as central theme.
